Antique Victorian Wool Seersucker Bodice 1860s 70s Museum Display Steam Punk

A stunning Victorian bodice from around 1860s -1870s dated using the style of gigot (leg of mutton) sleeves. Bodices and skirts were worn separately to form the outfit. Hand made by a dress maker, no labels, both machine and hand sewn. The fabric is truly exceptional - a woven wool seersucker with a pronounced texture.

The fabric feels really crisp and textured. There are broad stripes of reflective wool satin weave and woven wool in a moss stitch giving a matte effect. The fabric alone makes the garment worthy of museum display. I have certainly never seen a fabric like this made into a garment.

Fitted bodice with panels at front and back. Front panel has the appearance of an underbodice but is all made in one. Gigot sleeves with gathered tops and slim tapered sleeves closing with press studs at wrist. Bodice closes with a mixture of hooks and eyes and press studs. Lined with fine black cotton sateen. There are panels of brown cotton where the bodice may have been altered for a pregnancy or as the wearer became more stout. Please see the photos carefully. The fabric itself has no damage apart from two small frayed areas at the neck - see last photos. Museum quality and displays well. Photographed on a size 12 Stockman mannequin.
